how to read scientific articles easily
Here is how to read a scientific paper (paper) which consists of the following three steps.
1. The First Step
The first step is to read (scan) the paper quickly. You may start whichever step you choose first. This step can be completed in five to minutes.
a. Pay close attention to titles, abstracts, and introductions
b. Read the head section and the subsection head, but ignore what's in it.
c. Read at a glance any mathematical content / formulas if any to determine the theoretical basis used
d. Read the conclusion
e. Glance at the references, to see if there is a connection with what we have read before.
At the end of this step, you should be able to answer a few 5K questions:
a. Category: What type of paper? Paper size? And the analysis system? Describe the basic form of the paper?
b. Context: Which other paper has this paper in common? Which theoretical basis is used to analyze the problem?
c. Truth: Are the assumptions presented accordingly?
d. Contribution: Does the subject matter of the paper have a major contribution?
e. Clarity: Is the paper well written?
2. Second Step
The second step, read the paper with great care but ignore the too detailed parts such as evidence. This helps you to understand the key points or you can take notes and make comments on the outline of the paper you are reading. Dominik Grusemann from the Ausburg Union suggests that you should
"Write down any terms that make you don't understand, or questions you want to ask the author."
If you act like a jury on a paper, these comments can help you when you write your review and to present your review like in a program committee meeting.
a. Look carefully at the pictures, diagrams, and other illustrations in the paper. Pay special attention to charts. Are axes properly labeled? Are results presented with wrong bars / lines? Most of the mistakes are generally caused by the hasty nature of the writer.
b. Remember to mark things that are relevant. Read previously unread references. This is the perfect time to find out the background of the paper.
3. Third Step
To fully understand the paper, you must really review and understand this third step. The key to the third step is trying to re-implement the paper. That means you make the same assumptions as the author and then rewrite it. By combining the re-creation with the actual paper, you can more easily identify not only the innovations of the paper but also hidden shortcomings and assumptions.
