Introducing Plate Dance
The
plate dance is a traditional dance originating from Minangkabau, to be precise
from the city of Solok, West Sumatra province. The name of this dance comes
from the Minangkabau language and is unique as the umbrella dance which also
comes from the Minang culture.
The
movements and properties used by dancers make this dance very popular and in
demand by the Indonesian people, even foreign people also admire it. Therefore,
Indonesia should be proud of all forms of culture that are owned in every
region of the archipelago. Because this also becomes the identity and wealth of
the nation.
History of the Plate
Dance
The
plate dance is a traditional dance originating from Minangkabau, precisely from
Solok, West Sumatra. It is estimated that this dance has existed since 800
years ago. In ancient times, this dance was performed as a ritual of gratitude
to the gods for the blessings of a bountiful harvest.
When
carrying out the traditional ceremony, the community represented by the girls
will bring offerings in the form of food that is placed on a plate. The plate
containing the food is then brought in with movements according to the rhythm
of the accompanying music.
This
dance then became more widespread when the Srivijaya kingdom fell to Majapahit
in the 16th century. The spread was brought by the Sriwijaya people who fled to
the surrounding Malay countries.
Then
after Islam entered the Minangkabau area, the dance changed its function and
was no longer intended to worship the gods. The plate dance is transformed into
art and entertainment for the community, so it is often performed at
traditional Minangkabau events.
Function of Plate
Dance
In
ancient times the plate dance was only held by people from the wealthy group.
However, in today's social environment, the plate dance is usually performed
during traditional ceremonies such as weddings, circumcisions, and the
appointment of the head of the river. In addition, this dance is also held
during the main harvest.
Even
following the times, this dance does not only function for traditional
ceremonies. Dances are also used during national holidays, such as the
anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia and in order to welcome guests or high
officials.
The uniqueness of the
plate dance
Although
this dance is a hereditary heritage, the plate dance has not been eroded by the
times. This dance is still often performed until now and is able to make the
spectators amazed when they see its movements. These are the uniqueness of the
plate dance, namely:
1. Plate As The Main Property
As the
name implies, this dance uses the main equipment in the form of plates when
dancing. This plate is what makes this dance different from traditional dances
from other regions. The use of a plate as a dance movement has its own meaning
and history, and the great thing is that the plate never falls when played.
2. Unique Dance Movements
The
basic movement of the plate dance is to place the plate on your palms and then
grasp it. The plate is moved in a circle and swung to the rhythm of the
accompanying music. With a certain holding technique, the plate will not fall.
3. Various Accompaniment Music
To
accompany plate dancers, various types of musical instruments are used, such as
tambourines, gongs, saluang, talempong and so on. This dance is accompanied by
the rhythm of panayuhan music which usually plays the songs Takhian Sai Tiusung
and Takhi Pinghing Khua Belas. The unique combination of movements and music
makes this dance one second to none.
4. Ring and Plate Clink Sound
When
dancing, a clinking sound will appear coming from the rings and plates which
become property. The sound adds to the characteristics of this dance because it
can blend with the accompanying music.
5. Dancing on the plate shards
Another
uniqueness that doesn't seem to be owned by any dance art is at the end of the
show. The dancers will throw the plate on the floor until it breaks, then walk
on the sharp shards of the plate without getting hurt.
Plate Dancer Costume
Each
regional dance must have a unique type and form of clothing when performing. In
the plate dance, the dancers will wear two types of clothing, namely clothes
for men and women. Although they consist of types of costumes, their appearance
looks uniform and compact.
1. Men's Dancer Clothing
The
clothes of male dancers have different characteristics from the clothes of
female dancers. However, both of them are original clothes from Minangkabau.
Men's plate dancer costumes are called Rang Mudo, namely in the form of
long-sleeved clothing and missia decorations which are also called gold lace
decorations.
For the
subordinates or pants used, it is called the wave size. These pants are large
in the middle and have a color that matches the top. In addition, male dancers
also wear equipment such as sisampek and cawek waist which are shaped like
songket cloth, then tied around the waist.
The
length of this cloth is up to the knee and has decorations in the form of
tassels. When performing the plate dance, the male dancer will wear a headband.
Destar is a triangular head covering made of songket cloth.
2. Women's Dancer Clothing
The
brackets are a type of clothing used by female plate dancers. The main
ingredients for making it are satin and velvet cloth. In addition, female
dancers will also wear a scarf made of songket cloth as decoration which is
placed on the left side of the body.
Just
like male dancers, female dancers also use a head covering made of songket
cloth that looks like a horn. This head covering is known as tikuluak tanduak
balapak. Furthermore, the female dancers also wear tassel necklaces, gadang
necklaces, and Minang-style earring or earrings.
